While at uni my personal style has developed a lot and I’ve started being a bit more adventurous with the things that I have been wearing. I’ve added more colour to my wardrobe, mainly pinks and oranges, and started wearing different silhouettes. I haven’t been wearing jeans as often, and when I do they’re normally mom or boyfriend styles rather than super tight. At uni you’ll find that you end up with certain clothes for different types of days.
Library Clothes
(From Left: Black Side Stripe Hoodie (£15) and matching Joggers (£15), Oversized Hoodie (SALE £10), High Waisted ¾ Leggings (£6)
The library is the last place you’ll want to be dressing up especially if you know it’s going to be a long night of studying and looking at computer screens. To stay as comfortable as possible I’d definitely recommend you find a selection of tracksuits and hoodies as well as a lot of leggings and baggy t-shirts.
Art Threads
(From Left: Classic White T-Shirt £7, Embroidered Boob Tee £8, Cropped Retro Tee £6)
If, like me, you’re doing a course that involves days where you’re bound to get messy then you’re going to end up ruining a lot of clothes unless you have dedicated ‘messy’ clothes. Men’s t-shirts are always best for a relaxed and oversized fit which is perfect for moving around the print room or studio spaces. I always wear white t-shirts for these kinds of days because whatever colour ends up on it almost adds to the top. Little tip: never spend more than £10 on clothes that you know will end up with marks all over them and always pair with old jeans, shorts or leggings.
Quick Fits
(Top Row, From Left: Tall Black Casual Wide Leg Trousers £18, Stretchy Trousers £20, Black Tie Waist Cropped Trousers £19.99)
(Bottom Row, From Left: Love Print Tee £10, Embroidered Rose Tee £10, Screen Skull Top £18)
These are the kind of clothes you need when you have a 9am lecture but wake up at 9.15 and everything seems to be taking forever. The ‘quick t-shirt and wide leg trouser’ combo has saved me so many times and has almost become one of my staple styles. When you’re doing your uni clothes shopping make sure you pick up a selection of graphic tees and some wide leg trousers.
Layers and Layers
(From Left: Teddy Faux Fur Bomber Jacket £29.99, Camel Denim Jacket £29.99, Ribbed Wide Sleeve Jumper £20)
Layering is essential to me at uni, especially because I’m in Manchester with unpredictable weather. I always get jackets oversized so I can wear them over hoodies and thick jumpers, I also make sure they’re not lined with something that will make me overheat and that wont shed onto my clothes. Whenever I shop for jackets I make sure they don’t look low quality even if they are low in price, normally high street brands are amazing for faux furs and leather; they’re also really good for oversized denim at a lower price.
Uni Bags
(From Left: Help Refugees Choose Love organic cotton tote bag £8, Eastpak Orange Padded Backpack £45, Slouchy Holdall £22)
After freshers, you’ll end up with about 50 different tote bags and you’ll actually end up using a few of them so only get rid of the ugly ones (there will be a lot of ugly ones) and keep any that are nice colours, prints or sizes. Backpacks are standard for uni but definitely invest in one you can use all year round; every backpack I have invested in has lasted me so long and now I’ve got about 5 that I’ve basically rotated since secondary school. If you’re going to be getting coaches to and from home you should definitely get a get a strong holdall bag that you don’t mind getting thrown about; they also hold loads of stuff and you don’t have to drag it around behind you.
Little Extras
(Top Row, From Left: Statement Tortoiseshell Earrings £8, Spiral Gold Hoop £6, Twist Hoop Earrings £10)
(Bottom Row, From Left: Vintage Style Necklace £6, Moon Face Necklace £18, Vintage Coin Necklace £18)
Accessories can make any outfit look like you’ve put in a lot more effort than you actually have. I wear earrings, normally gold hoops, everyday because they always finish off any outfit. This season, we’ve seen a huge trend in statement earrings and the trend seems to be carrying on into A/W18 so make sure you keep an eye out for the shapes and colours. If I do wear a statement earring, I usually go for something that’s a darker colour so they don’t distract from what I’m wearing too much. I also always wear a necklace as I think wearing subtle jewellery adds to the illusion that you’ve made loads of effort even if all you’ve done is rolled out of bed and grabbed the nearest hoodie.
